Witr Salah and Dua Qunoot
Allah has instructed Muslims to offer Salah five times a day. Salah (prayer) is the second pillar of Islam, and without performing it, we are neglecting a huge part of Islam. The Prophet (PBUH) even said that the difference between faith and disbelief is prayer. Among the five prayers is Isha prayer, and witr is one of the parts of Isha prayer, where Dua Qunoot comes in.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to recite Dua Qunoot in the witr salah regularly. The correct way to recite it is to do so in the final rakat. There, you recite Dua Qunoot either before or after the ruku. The more common version seems to be before ruku, but a lot of people also recite it after.
Witr itself is either obligatory or a highly recommended sunnah according to various opinions. However, Dua Qunoot is not compulsory. Instead, many people recite general duas as well. If you pray in a mosque often, especially Taraweeh during Ramadan, you’ll notice that many Imams recite duas for the general well-being of Muslims. However, since the Prophet (PBUH) regularly recited it in Dua Qunoot in the witr salah, we must also try to emulate him as often as possible to gain reward from Allah.
